The shooting starts in February for the long-awaited Lone Ranger movie starring Johnny Depp as Tonto, a project that once appeared to be doomed.
On Friday, Gov. Susana Martinez announced the movie will begin production in New Mexico.
“The Lone Ranger is proof New Mexico’s film industry is alive and well,” she said.
At one point the movie’s producers threatened to shoot it in Louisiana, when Martinez called for cutbacks in the state’s sweet rebate deal for the film industry.

Yesterday, it was confirmed that Armie Hammer will play the Lone Ranger. He will be starring alongside Johnny Depp, who is playing Tonto.
When Johnny Depp was first cast as Tonto in Disney and Jerry Bruckheimer’s bigscreen adaptation of “The Lone Ranger,” Armie Hammer was a relative unknown in Hollywood who was ready to break out as Batman in Warner Bros.’ “Justice League.”
Three years later, Hammer has been handed a high-profile black mask he’ll actually get to wear, landing the titular role as the crime- the crime-fighting Texas Ranger in “Lone Ranger.”
Thesp is finalizing a deal to saddle up and shout the signature “Hi-yo, Silver! Away!” line in the pic that Gore Verbinski will shoot sometime in the fall based on a script by Justin Haythe.
